Is the Yamaha YBS-61 Eb Bari s

Is it a good horn?

    What would be a good price for a '61'? I've played the one i am thinking of buying and it plays really well and is very good condition having had £400 spent on a service and other tweaks a while ago. A rough figure would do.

    Yes. This is the model before the present YBS-62, the 61 is probably pre 1977.

      my school has two and they play just as well as the ybs 62 and our yani 880 baris....good horns if you can find em.

        Yamaha had a "factory recall" on the YBS-61 after their introduction to answer upper octave intonation complaints from buyers. A template was sent to Yamaha dealers to enable them to relocate the octave pips. Be sure that any horn you buy has had this critical correction done. It's easy to spot: there will be a patch where the old pips were removed.

          thats interesting, i'm going to go check my school's ybs 61's tomorrow and see if they have that correction. man steve, you know some cool little facts about horns!

        YBS-61 upper octave key template

        Cuber, the only one I've ever heard mention the octave key on the 61 bari is Goodson?? I did a search on the net and all I got was Goodson on this site. It may or not be true???

        Steve sent me a template, i don't know if it really come from Yamaha, but i might try the modification, i'll let you know... Steve sent it to me the same day i got in touch with him,... for free...very cool... thanks

        Hi guys,
        I have an eye on 2 YBS-61 which are in excellent condition, their serial number are 05xx and 10xx. The seller can't tell me if they are in that recall interval, so I ask: with these serial numbers, anyone here could tell me if they are "safe" or not? And, if I'm not too lucky, what's the complexity of the modification? We have to make a new hole on the body of the sax and to close the wrong one (waw!)? Is this template easy to obtain?

        You should check with Yamaha and get a copy of the modification template.....they will be happy to send you one......the modification involves relocating an octave pip and fabricating a new octave key for that pip......insofar as I know, the recall applies to all of the 61 series baritones......
