One of the best, if not the best student alto sax is a Yamaha YAS-23. New, they cost around $1,200.00. You may find a used one in good shape for about $500.00 to $600.00. They are well built and made in Japan. I've never heard of a "Barington" brand . Maybe they are made in China. Most Chinese saxes are very low quality, a few are not. So buy with care.

I think that they are made in Taiwan...(also it's possibly an offshoot of LA sax, though I don't know) Thanks!

LA sax are generally lousy horns, so an offshoot would really be a bummer to have to play on. YAS-23 is a safe bet, and so are student Selmers, and selmer bundys. check out "jim's list of approved saxophones". its a posting, i think under 'high school saxophone'
