Re: Evil prospers when good men sit on the fence. So do liars, scammers, carpetbaggers & bastards.
Greetings-
I'm not sure of the exact instance you are referring to. I've deleted and edited several posts over the past several days and will continue to do so as I see fit. If you feel that I've treated someone unfairly or if I've missed something please let me know. I promise that I will look into it. I'm taking a completely unbiased approach to this. I have nothing keeping me from doing otherwise.
I'm sure there are entire threads that still need to go and other replies that need to be edited or deleted. My eraser and my delete button will be large over the next several months.
You can always reach me regarding issues related to the forum at forum@saxquest.com. In most instances I would rather you email me as opposed to posting a message in the forum as I may not get to a message in the forum right away whereas email comes to me instantaneously. I'm making a concerted effort to clean up the forum and I'll be making a major overhaul in regard to functionality soon as well.
I offer many free services on the Saxquest web site and take time to answer way more informational type emails than I really should. I do my best to keep up with all of these things. It not easy with two kids under the age of 4, trying to run a business with several employees, dealing with local business issues, and keeping a large web site like Saxquest secure and up to date. Its expensive and time consuming and the learning curve is HUGE. I'm not saying any of this to complain, but just to give you a sense of what's on my plate and where I'm coming from.
I still love the saxophone and I'm passionate about playing. Unfortunately, dealing with all of the BS (including a good bit which comes from this forum) has a way of squelching ones enthusiam and stultifying the mind.
The quote you give above from our web site was made in 1999 when Saxquest was first launched and still applies today. You call it rhetoric and I suppose it is, but it comes from the heart. In fact, the plethora of disception by supposed expert dealers and the paucity of good available information before the days of the Internet coupled with a love for the instrument were the major reasons my wife and I started this crazy thing we called Saxquest. Still today, I would rather loose money on a deal (and I have on many occasions) than walk away feeling that I've knowingly taken advantage of someone. The statement you quote may have the appearance of being rhetoric but, by this point, anyone who's done business with us knows it to be fact.
I'm always amazed by the fact that some of the most frequent users (and abusers) of this forum (and some of those who complain the most about how the forum is run) haven't supported us by so much as buying even a single box of reeds over the years. Perhaps, they have referred other poeple to our site, I don't know, but I've always found their lack of direct support an oddity.
Anyway, if I read your post correctly, you are accusing me of sitting on the fence and not taking sides in regards to the Steve Goodson/John Talcott war, to be specific. Well, I will always remain unbiased in my approach to this forum regardless of my personal views. I don't think that is what allows evil to prosper. However, having faith that people can work out their differences in a nearly unmonitored environment (when personal agendas take precedence over human decency) was perhaps sadly naive and generated an environ to brood evil. That is what I've set out to change.
But I am human and can only do so much and I do make blunders from time to time. For example, I accidentally truncated several months worth of posts a while back when trying to run a script on the database to clean it up and at the same time my back-up failed (again trying to do too much with too little time). I'm sure you've seen those truncated posts. That was a big oops........and I'm sure I'll make more mistakes in the future.
All we can do is keep the faith and do our best. So long as we keep booking gigs and have people close to us that we call loved ones, then we're doing something right!!!
Cheers,
Mark Overton

hi Mark, I support the idea of maintaining certain standards on forums like this. I guess my main point of difference is that I think referring to an unrepentant liar as 'a liar' isn't so much personal, more just a statement of fact. I also felt the whole Goodson/Bowles/jbt saga wasn't so much a 'war', more an exposé, and therefore an important public resource. however I respect your right not to want it on your forum.

Re: Evil prospers when good men sit on the fence. So do liars, scammers, carpetbaggers & bastards.
I'd love to have you stop by for a visit. Anyone who comes to visit St. Louis is welcome to stop by the shop. Where else can you play test a quartet of original pre-civil war Adolphe Sax saxes, a Conn-O-Sax, a Selmer BA c-melody, and a whole plethora of other interesting saxophones.
As for the Goodson thing. It had become a war when nearly every other post began going that direction and I began getting emails from long time Saxquest customers saying that they were leaving Saxquest because the forum had become a ridiculous side-show as opposed to having any real value as a place for people to share ideas and learn a thing or two. That's a real drag for me when I've poured my heart and sole into this business over the past several years. It had gone way beyond the service announcement phase a long time back.
BTW Chalazon, a slant sig is a 1960-70's vintage Otto Link hard rubber mouthpiece (usually referring to tenor). They are immediately recognized as having the Otto Link name is a slant accross the back of the barrel as opposed to straight across (like current production pieces). The slant sig has a slightly different chamber configuration and beak profile.
Cheers,
Mark Overton

and better quality ebonite from what I've seen. but that's probably true across the board. the new soloists are no comparison to the proper short shanks.
