New on the block

Hi, I've been playing melody sax as a non-reading musician for 40 years and now wish to embark in the field of improvisation. I have a fair idea of scale and chord structures (theory). As is the case with Golf, if you start off incorrectly, you aquire negative habits. My request is therefor, how & where must I start and what would be the best practice roster? Hope this does not sound too lame?? Pse help. Thanx.
