Martin Neck Octave Pad

I recently acquired a Martin Handcraft Committee s/n 121xxx. The pad on the neck octave is not leather but cork. Was this standard issue? Also, the cork looks to never have been greased. It leaked badly when I bought it. Now cleaned and playable but should I grease the cork pad? Replace with leather? Many thanks!
