Re: Am I the only one who names my saxophone?

Phhff... I would say you are the junenille one for poking fun at and degrading the good people of this forum, 2Hard2Blow. My parents sort of named my alto for me. They would always ask where's the sax, what's the sax doing sitting there, don't you need to go get the sax? Now it has sort of become a title/name, The Sax. My user name comes from it. I still have yet to officially name it though... My soprano on the other hand, is officially named Emma, just for the the fact I have a certain affection for the name, and my fellow band mates and I always name our sax in the opposite gender from ourselves.

Bubba seems like a good name for a Bari! As I said, My tenor is "old Betty", my Chu Berry Alto is named Lois after my grandmother, I have a Fender Strat named Sarah after an old girlfriend, and a Martin acoustic named Maggie. I have a couple other saxophones that need names. any suggestions? Old Betty, my 1948 10M often shares a stand with another naked lady; my 1950 Conn 6M alto.

I own a Cannonball Mad Meg ULL (unlaquered body, laquered keys, laquered inside of bell). My friends tell me that a real Mad Meg is 100% unlaquered, therefore mine is not a real Mad Meg. I don't know if this is accurate or not, but in light of this little theroy, I've jokingly dubbed my horn the "Disgruntled Meg". Right back atcha Mike and Eric!!!

Re: Am I the only one who names my saxophone?

My grandmother was born in 1926 and passed away in Sept. of 2000. I bought a 1926 Conn New Wonder Series II (Chu Berry) alto, and had it custom engraved with my grandmother's name Lois on the bell with her birth-date and the date of her death. My grandma was a major inspiration in my music. A friend and former band mate nicknamed my 1948 10M "Old Betty". When I asked him "why Betty?", he said he worked in a nursing home for a while and that one of the residents there, who's name was Betty liked to walk up and down the halls of the nursing home naked, and they would have to chase her back to her room and help her get dressed! And for those of you who don't know...the 10M is called the Naked Lady because of the engraving of a topless woman on the bell.

Way back in high school, when it was just me, my old Conn tenor (naked lady) and old Conn soprano, I named them Trinidad and Tobago. But I have never named my bari, which is my "home" sax, nor the old Conn alto I got two years ago. I need to work on that.

The only horn that I felt compelled to name was my first bari - a 12M. I called it "Humpty Dumpty" as I refurbished it and had much better luck than "all the king's horses and all the king's men".

I play in a Blues based band. My main horn is an old Conn C-mel that I modified and overhauled. The horn has never had any lacquer and has never been polished except on the inside, so it has 85 years of oxidation on the bare brass. It's very shiney where my hands touch it. I call it Crusty
