Which Conn is this??

An acquaintance who plays alto mentioned that his horn is an old Conn. He brought out a silver plated (matte) horn, serial #M166XXX, with an A on top of the number and an L below it, rolled tone holes, and the "fingernail file" G# key. No engraving. The neck is conventionally overslung, with a double ferule microtuner. The horn is absolutely immaculate, with not a ding or scratch, and has 99% of the plating (re-plated?). He said he bought it in the 70"s from a small music store in Jersey for a little of $200. Which Conn is this (Chu Berry?) How much is it worth? Thanks for any info.

Yep, it's a Chu Berry, or New Wonder Series II. These were made from 1925-1932 and M166 dates this one to 1925, so it's one of the earlier Chu's. Charlie Parker played a Chu in his earlier days. If the horn is in excellant shape, which it sounds like it is, it's worth $1800-$2000.

Thanks, Jim. He was very pleased to learn this. The horn means a lot to him. He intends on playing it the rest of his life, and has no interest in any other alto. I knew this would be an easy one for you.
