What to buy...Selmer Ref or Yamaha Z

I'm in the market for a new alto and plan to try out the Selmer Ref 54 (?) or the custom Z or 62. A few years ago I tried out the Selmer series 2 and the yamaha 62 and I was more impressed by the 62. Looking for feedback from the experts out there. Is the selmer worth the extra $$$$ over the yamaha Z or 62?

NO! If the Selmer Reference was a few hundred more than the Yamaha it might be worth considering but considering how good the Yamaha is I can't justify the price. Phil Woods doesn't just play one because Yamaha pays him, and besides listen to him play it!

I'd buy the Z. Modern Selmers are way too overrated and overpriced. I play a 62, and it's awesome. Take the money you saved and buy a cheap car. -tenor562

The Selmer Ref 36 and 54 are both good horns, but at a premium price. The Series III, are over-rate JUNK in my opinion, as are most of the other Selmers. When you compare quality and costs, the Yamaha is definately the best value.
