set up

Should a store adjust a new horn before sales ? Or should a new horn usually be adjusted already?

    Re: set up

I'm of the opinion that no instrument (old or new) should be sold without first being reviewed by a tech. For better or for worse, some techs are better than others. As most new saxophones now come from overseas, a factory set-up might not necessarily hold through the long journey to the showroom. If the store you are buying from has an in-house tech, tell them you want it looked over and checked for pad leaks, neck fit, etc. as part of the purchase agreement. You should also get a period of time that you can bring it in for adjustments with little or no charge. Things on the horn will settle in as it is played, so an occasional adjustment here and there is expected.
