John Temmerman is a saxophonist whom you may not of heard before... don't let it stay that way. Jazz Obsession Music is his first recorded effort as a session leader, although you would never know it by the interplay and sensitivity offered by the trio and especially John. John Temmerman's playing may not be for everyone though; if you don't appreciate a sensous tone, superb intonation and an accessible approach to some fine standards, you might not appreciate this recording.
The sounds of this recording harken back to the drumless jazz trios that came out of the late forties and early 50's. John's savvy tenor tone also looks back at classic swing tenor stylizations for inspiriation. John covers new yet familiar ground in his solos which are typically less bop influenced and more just plain swinging. The subtleties found in most of these cuts lie in gentle swinging and inflection in vibrato and note choices.
This album also features a very hip rhythm section comprised of Mike Allemana on guitar and Matt Ferguson on string bass. Both players exhibit a great deal of swinging sensibility in solos and comping, which helps round out a rather challenging format for rhythm soloing and development.
I recommend "Jazz Obsession Music" to those who wish to revel in the inherent beauty of some classic jazz, and also discover a player who deserves to be heard.
