getting started

I am very interested in learning to play the sax, and would love to know where to start. What type of sax to start with and what are some good books?

    Re: getting started

Read the section on high school horns - but first find a good sax teacher in your area - one that you get along with well - and start there. You will waste time trying to self-teach. Don't be afraid to start with a vintage horn that just needs re-padding. Learn to care for it properly from your teacher. If you choose to buy a pro horn some day, a vintage horn will make a better trade-in. Good Luck

Actually I see most folks recommend a newer horn to get started. There's a student model Yamaha for sale here with new pads for $800 or so. Remember to learn right -- a private teacher will show you how to protect your investment by taking care of your horn - as well the best way to learn. The fewer lessons kids I knew took, the worse was their technique.
