A YAS23 is fine, I think. As far as age goes, I don't think it matters that much as long as it is in good playing condition. And in saxophone world, 10 years is really not very old. Many professionals use a model called the Selmer Mark VI that varies from 30 to 50 years old, approximately. Also, check the post 'Jim's List of Approved Horns' for more ideas about decent student model saxes.

Hey Rookie Mom, Me too! Son starting band in grade 7 in Sept. Here we go! Hope they stick with it and enjoy it as much as I think they will. I want to learn with him! We just got a King Cleveland 613. The YAS23 was has been recommended in almost all I have read. I am currently teaching my son how to clean it. Good Luck and let me know sometime how it is going!
