      A saxophone mute doesn't give your horn the sound that is accompanied by a mute with a trumpet, but it does decrease the amount of sound coming out of your horn. I find it works for the first 2 octaves, but if you start doing altissimo it doesn't work as well. You can get the same effect with a sock in your bell.
