There are many variants of C*, so the answer to your question depends on which two you have in mind. If there are examples/pictures you can direct to, I can probably answer your question.

I dont have pictures, all I know mostly is that the scroll shanks have a horseshoe type chamber and the regular C*s have a squared chamber

C* is a facing tip opening size. S80 and S90 are square chambered. The Soloists are horseshoe chambered with the LT model (both scroll and modern shank) having a medium round chamber. Pre-Soloist pieces and Airflow models had round chambers - the older models having very large round chambers like a Buescher or Link. Some of the pre-Soloists have medium round chambers - these being the pieces Larry Teal had Selmer bring back as the LT model.

and what differences in sound and playing do the square and horshoe chambers have?

The shape of the chamber is not relevant - the area of the opening is, however (small vs. large). Having said that, the other features of the mpc design matter more to the sound - the shape of the chamber is the least relevant design feature. Tip opening, baffle shape, beak profile - those matter to a much greater extent.

So are you saying the two pieces can be identical? If they are both a C* facing?

          Re: Vintage Selmer C*s

If the internals like the baffle and sidewalls are similar, then two C* facings CAN play very similarly. There is a lot of variation with mouthpeice manufacturing, so very often you can play two of the same design and facing and they play a little differently from each other.
