what songs to call?

ok you are going to a jazz jam and a good piano player is the leader. What song do you call and why.

Kneejerk, call something you know. (do you really need to know why?) Even better, call something everyone knows. (see above) Otherwise, a blues in F would be a safe choice.....Kelsey

so you think it's better to call something you know than to try to think of a song that the piano player might enjoy.

If possible, listen to the band days ahead before you set in, learn a couple of tunes that they play and call the tunes they are used to playing. They will be impressed with you as a player and it will go much better for everyone..............Kelsey

i really like bill evans, his stuff is usually tuff for lesser keyboard players, also Horace Silver. Have you ever heard of John Coates??? he has 2 cd's out with Phil woods, great stuff with just him and phil, Giants at play and Giants at work check them out if you haven't already.

          Re: what songs to call?

Thanks for the tip. I always love Phil Woods. Bill Evans tunes are a little hard unless you know them for sure. I had this gig where the piano player would only play Bill Evans tunes. What a nightmare that was for me. I didn't know hardly any of the tunes. I'm great with standards but these little played tunes that some guys want to do, that's when I wish I had a Bill Evans fake book...........barry

Hey Cuber! Cherokee was the Giant Steps of the olden days, but it was easy once you figured out the B section. Giant Steps I still work on from time to time........Kelsey
