tuning altos

Hi, I have a question about tuning in band. When we warm up every day our band director(percussionist) makes the low brass and tenors play a low concert Bflat. He will then tune us and make us play it and hold it. Next, he will go around and make all the other sections tune a fifth up. My problem with this is that for our sucky alto section this ends up being a D. Is this as big of a problem as I think it is??????

hmm . . . seems to me that you should try to tune to the same note? We always tune to the F#. Kelsey

The F, or F# on ALL saxophones is the best possible not to tune on. I like the F# better because you get further down the horn. The octave pip is placed such that the F or F3 is in the perfect place for those 2 notes. I a symphony, they ALWAYS tune on a concert A off of the principal oboe player - tell him to do that if nothing else.
