What Will Happen?

I have an unopened box of Vandoren AS 2 1/2 -3 with the date 10/23/73 written in pen on the front (this was part of a mint MKVI alto 147XXX SN I bought several years ago) Are reeds of this age playable?

soak and prep them like you would normally and they will perform like any other reed

no, soak them for at least 15 minutes in warm water and they will play better than any other reed made today.

I had a full box of #2 reeds in the case of a New Wonder series I alto I bought that were probably at LEAST 50 years old. I let a couple of them soak and they worked fine. I really don't think the age makes too much difference. I'd recommend soaking any reed before using it. They do dry out even just sitting on the shelf in a music store for a couple years
