HaHa please, join me..

ok im a lil slow on the ball, I am 16, been playn sax for around 6 years give or take but havnt really been "playin" for more than 4.. i juuusssttt realized if i want to get better ( jazz, improv, legit, anything ) i need to listen to others..get good jazz cds and listen..critique them, try to emulate a sound you like, or a tone you enjoy..using things you hear in your improv and just the meer fact of listening to good stuff will make you confident enough and happy enough to just naturally play better.. here are some cd's ive just got but im looking to expand my library, provided that you guys lemme know what some of your favorites are.. -johnny hodges_passion flower -John Coltrane_blue train -miles davis_kind of blue -charlie parker_yardbird suite..i think thats the name of it..it has like 40 songs.. -devils workshop_idle hands and thats all ive really got..my favorite right now is devils cuz that is more of a big band setting..then the miles davis one is pretty good..adderly is hte alto on that and i like him any takers?

Look at the Nuclear Whales, a saxophone septet and the Texas Sax Quartet, both are really good. Also, Im listening to the Sonny Rollins - Sonny Rollin's finest hour CD, Dave Sanborn - Another Hand CD, and Grover Washington - Winelight CD Also, look at tower of Power, the funk group. Lenny Pickett is awesome!

I'd suggest that you check out anything by: Dexter Gordon ("Ballads" is a gread CD), Don Byas, Coleman Hawkins (The "Portrait" 10CD Boxed set from Europe is a must have.), Harry Carney, as you've discovered the great Johnny "Jeep" Hodges and Charlie Parker, Benny Golson and Charlie Rouse. This list could go on and on, but these are some great ones to start with. Cheers. Mike.

Great choices saxismyaxe. I'd also suggest Stan Getz and Tom Scott. Grover Washington Jr. has some nice stuff to that's fun to play. I like his version of Take Five, Ain't No Sunshine, and of course Mr. Magic. Power Tower is fun to play along with, and so is the Average White Band (Great tenor solo in Pick Up The Pieces). I'll let you know if I think of some other good ones. I played in a funk band for a while which eventually evolved into a blues band. Very fun stuff to play. We do the whole Blues Bros. thing now, dress up in the suits and hats, the whole bit. We play at some of the nicer clubs and casinos in the Detroit/Windsor area. It's loads of fun!
