It's a journey with no desination

One of the wonderful things about music, is it's a journey with no destination. I don't think you ever really "get there." Once you get to where you thought you wanted to be, there are a whole bunch of new challenges and ideas and ways of expressing yourself that come up and the journey continues. I always remember seeing Lee Konitz when I was growing up. He was one of my early idols. He said he was always a student of the music. Most of the players I love most have that attitude. They keep their ears open, they stay teachable and hungry to learn more. John Coltrane was an obvious case in point (probably an obsessive compulsive one at that). There are a lot of insecure musician's who act like "I've been there and done that. I'm such a badass." One of my old music teacher's Rich Matteson said something like, "Anybody who has stopped learning is coasting and when you're coasting, you're going downhill."
