new jazz band need ideas!!!

i am a student starting a student run jazz band with 2 tenor sax, 1 alto sax, 1 bari sax, 1 trombone, 1 valve trombone, 2 trumpets, and a rythym section need ideas for songs and conducting ideas

    Since buying big band arrangements is very expensive, I will suggest  having Jam sessions. If you not already own them, have all the members buy Real Books and work on tunes out of those. You could read the melodys together and work on learning to inprovise on the chord changes. Good luck!
