What happened to Selmer Tenors?

The Mark VI. Wow. I played a dilapidated old six with no lacquer or even color, just rusty brass, and it looked like a jalopy. It played beautifully, and projected like a beast. But today, Selmer Tenors have lost their touch.... at least that's what I heard. I played a modern tenor with a satin finish that was pretty good, but others tell me that most of them are under the bar that they set. Not true of the altos though. What is with this? Crazy talk? Or truth?

Selmer altos are the alto of choice for many pro players. The Mark VI was an acceptional tenor, and still a favorite of many pro players today; but Selmer tenors never got the recognition that their altos did. A Selmer tenor certainly wouldn't be my first choice. I'd grab my Conn 10M or my King Super 20 over a Selmer tenor anyday.
