Mark IV prices

A while ago I called the guy from USA horn, and asked him about his prices for his Mark IV alto saxophones. I was kind of surprised when he told me some of the prices - they vary by thousands of dollars! Why is that? Could I go wrong with a Mark IV that isn't as expensive as another? Out of the Mark IV altos on USA horn, which ones would you recommend, and what would make them better than the others? Thanks! Kara

    Re: Mark IV prices

The value can range depending on when it was made and the overall mechanical and cosmetic condition of the horn. Particularily, VIs make between the 80,000 and 120,000 serial ranges are the most sought after, and most expensive. With the VI being the horn for so many in commercial settings, It would not surprise me if having 95%+ intact laquer would give a value up to 50% higher than a well worn horn made the same year. Some people like their vintage selmers shiney, and they're willing to pay for it.
