Ocatave key having no affect?

Well I was reading the art of saxopgone by Larry Teal and one of the exercises is switching from middle a to high a pressing the octave key with the right index finger. I do that and start with middle 'a' then press the octave key and it will go to high 'a' but when I let it go, it just stays there, unless I stop and start again. It does this on b and c as well. I just can't slur these and get the right response. I tried tighening my embouchore and loosening it as well, with the same results. Any ideas?

When you line up your reed against your mouthpiece pull the reed back a bit to leave a tiny gap between the tip of the mouthpiece and the tip of the reed. You may need to work on your embouchore as well, but this may help. Good luck!

Having read this post and the one about the palm keys, I'd guess you'll get some success out of more long=tone practice. Also, if its been more than, say, a year since a tune-up, its entirely possible that you have some leaks.

    Just practice lip slurs/overtones.
