Jazz Theory and Arranging

I am a college student who is very interested in composing. My favorite type of music is jazz, so I'd like to learn to arrange and write new tunes for combos, jazz ensembles, and eventually jazz ensemble and a studio orchestra. Can anyone recommend some really helpful books to get me started with jazz theory and arranging? Thanks for the help.

You first need an understanding of traditional theory. If you don't have that than don't bother with Jazz. If you do let me know and I'll find out what books I used in my Jazz theory classes in school.

Yes, I have learned some classical theory. I studied basics in high school and have taken two semesters of traditional music theory in college. I'd be interested in knowing what books you used for jazz theory and how well they worked for you, bmcguire. Thanks for the help!
