what are tone plates?

new metal tenor mouthpeice came with two black,wedge shaped plastic inserts. i think these are called tone plates, but what do you do with these, when installed , the mouthpeice is harder to play, mouthpeiceplays better with open chamber... any ideas?

    I think you are talking about spoilers. They are little things you insert into the mouthpiece and they have a metal piece that vibrates when you play, giving a much brighter tone. The mouthpiece shouldn't be TOO much harder to play with a spoiler....

      Yes, they're usually called spoilers, although the mouthpiece company may have a different name for them. Some of the newer jazz mouthpieces have them. I've only tried one and I really didn't care for it at all. It closed off the chamber too much I think. The horn sounded too raspy and thin. I like a wide open chamber, like an Otto Link Super Tone Master, or a Meyer.
