Writing music

Ok i am trying to write music for a small jazz band... i do not know how to even get started my first time. Can anyone recomend a book or something to write or how i could just start?

    start with transcribing tunes you've heard before, that have relatively few parts. Then move on to more difficult parts, and your own stuff will come in due time. Remember, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC!

      i do listen to music in my head and i can reproduce the sounds on my sax its puttin it down on paper that i cant do right yet. So transcribe others parts and just do it til;l i hurt?

          It is a great deal more convient if you use a computer program like Finale 2005. They have a free version called Notepad that is available on their website: www.finalemusic.com/notepad
