Mouthpieces

Could someone please help me understand the difference between an alto and tenor sax mouthpiece? What happens if you put a mouthpiece designed for a tenor sax on an alto sax?

    Re: Mouthpieces

The difference is in the size. A tenor mouthpiece has the right length for proper tuning on a tenor sax and has the correct chamber configuration for ease of response. Same goes for all of the different instrument types. Whereas you can get a sound out of an alto mouthpiece on a tenor sax and vice versa, it will never play right. Tuning will be off, response will be wonky and the sound will be weird.

The tenor piece will be too large. You can use plumbers white teflon tape to help it fit.

It will more than likely play out of tune, the bore of the mouthpiece is too big for the alto.
