Dukoff D8 Tenor Mothpiece question

Several years ago I picked up a Dukoff d8 Mouthpiece (first metal mouthpiece) at a big store going out of buisness sale grabbed a soprano sax for a song as well. Life being what it is, tossed them in the closet and forgot about them, pulled the mouthpiece out today and went to put a reed on it. I notice that the reed sticks out a good 3/8ths of an inch beyond the table, is this normal (as in by design and if so why..it looks fairly funny)? Or are there certain shorter reeds designed for these mouthpieces that I have just never heard of? Reeds in question are the standard Vandoren 3's I used on my other mouthpiece. Width and everything fit just fine on the Dukoff, just a weird look that kind of baffled me.
