What kind of Student Alto Sax to purchase?

What brand and/or model of alto sax and tenor sax would you recommend to an average high school student that wants to go major in music in college (band directing) and needs a "step-up" horn from her beginner one?

*pop* I don't feel like listing all the wonderful horns there are. So. Just like. Don't get an intermediate horn for your "step-up". It's just a waste of money, because you'll need a pro horn in a year anyway.

Possibly a Keilwerth, and if it was me, a professional vintage Buescher, Conn etc. Best advice would be to check it out with the local saxophone specialist.

anything from selmer. ha. it's true. selmer is god. umm.... if you feel like playing a lot later on and feel like playing a bunch....think about a selmer paris. they are awesome. i don't actually have one... but i know people who do. and they are awesome. also.. if you want a semi cheap pro horn( please don't crucify me for saying this.).... yamaha has some decently priced horns.... my friend bought a really nice one for college... she's a music performance major at umass. so... it really depends on how much you want to pay i'm gonna buy a new tenor next year, and i'm sticking with a selmer. if i feel like splurging .. i'll go with a selmer paris. hope that was helpful * grins* ~sara

Sara - be aware Selmer Paris and USA are two different companies these days. IMO, you should stick to the selmer paris horns. Not to say the USA horns arent good, they just arent what the paris horns are. Now that being said... I am not a selmer fan, I prefer the vintage American horns.

I completely disagree with you saying that Selmer is "God". I am not a fan of Selmer Paris saxophones actually, I would prefer the Buescher 400's, Some of the good Keilwerth Stencils, and a lot more, I M O the selmers are dramatically overpriced, a lot of people would kill me to say it though.

Ok we arent starting a selmer flame war here. They are good horns, just they dont have the "it" that the vintage american and some german horns have for me. And yes, most of them cost waaaay to damned much!!

Be careful of Selmer USA student saxes. The pads are not always aligned with the toneholes correctly...more often that not, they are not. My dad and I own a repair shop and we have yet to see a Bundy II or more recent Selmer USA student saxophone without alignment issues...including sara's sax....hi honey, its grace.
