I've heard most everything ever recorded by Charlie Parker. I also love old recordings by Charlie Mingus. There are so many wonderful things to listen to. The only thing better than listening to jazz is learning to play jazz........Kelsey

Charlie Parker is an awsome sax player, I just wish his recordings weren't so crappy (not the song, just the static stuff old record or whatever.) But I listen to David Sanborn more, I just love the way he sounds=)

Re: who is your favorite sax player and song
The greatest sax player that has ever lived was Michael Brecker.
I have many favorites but Michael is the one player that could play things that will be forever impossible for me to play.
He is also a very under rated player.
Last year (2/25/06) I wrote the post saying Charlie Parker was my favorite.
Parker will always be my favorite but Michael Brecker was the best. This is my last post.....Kelsey

Re: who is your favorite sax player and song
As for me, the master of subtone Stan Getz. His Bossa Nova masterpiece Desafinado with Bird's rhythm section is simply moving. Also, his creation, Dark Eyes, is absolutely magnificent. My favorite of all time. (Also features another alto sax player whom I do not recognize. If anyone has the name I'd love it.)Wonderful dark mood that explodes into a fast paced movement of excitement. However, it is about 13 minutes long. Still amazing though.

Re: who is your favorite sax player and song
Has to be Stan Getz without a doubt. He moves with such fluency and his tone is unmatchable. That's why he's called the sound. My favorite sound has got to be Dark Eyes(seen that before:->). Great mood as well as rhythmic sense and chord changes. Love it to death.
Cheers,
Dark Eyes (unloved thesis)

My favorite sax player would definitely have to be Lester Young. I love his beautiful tone and how his solos are all so strong on rhythm.
My favorite tunes by Pres are "D.B. Blues" and a version of "I Got Rhythm" on an album called Classic Tenors.

Hoe-Down was recorded by Oliver Nelson on the record Blues and the Abstract Truth so pehaps you mean Oliver Nelson on tenor or Eric Dolphy on alto. They were both on that recording.

you really have to seperate by instrument
alto- Cannonball-he makes everything seem so effortless, its
as if hes just playing cause he want something to do
Tenor- Sonny Rollins-his latest album says it all
Bari- Mulligan/Cuber- i really cant decide witch one is better
saprano- coltrane- just cause he makes the thing sound like a saxamafoon, unlike EVERYONE else

Re: who is your favorite sax player and song
What an impossible yet always delicious question. Favorite player and song? Today it's Grolnick's Chime This and Brecker's solo. One of Brecker's greatest on record. Check out Trane's live Bye Bye Blackbird. A bootleg, I believe, recorded somewhere in Europe. A 6 minute+ tag! Brilliant. This time period, '61-64, is where Brecker and most modern tenor players are coming from.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Paul Desmond, one of my favorites, although I did see that someone mentioned the Dave Brubeck Quartet. A few more I would like to add to the list are Tom Scott, and Chris Potter.
My favorite sax player is Donald Wilson, who some of you may or may not know. Don has played with many greats over the years, and has been an inspiration to me since I first started. He is my mentor, and he is my uncle!
