Kenny, you have a great point, and I do agree with what you are saying, however I do believe it will be up up to the person to determine what type of musician he or she wants to be. If they want to learn the easy way, fine, but beware aspiring musicians, nothing comes easy. If they want to be great musicians, they will have to do what you Kenny, and others have done, which is spend time trying to take out music by ear, and learning scales, etc.

Re: Looking for Free Downloadable Sheet Music

I guess free stuff is ok...But I believe this brings to light a manifestation of some basic problems. I want free this...I want free that...Tell me how to...I do not want to pay any dues.... It is becoming a lazy society. We want to play sax, but we don't want to put in enough time to pick out the Pink Panther theme by ear! Give me a royal break. No wonder there will never be another Lester Young. Maybe someone will develop the Real-Book in the form of an injection! WOW! Boy, will we know the tunes then! I have no problem helping people out, it has become a major part of my life. But - - as a teacher, or as a caring human being, to cater to lazy whims is an extreme disservice to the future integrity of an aspiring musician. My best and hardest learning experiences came by having to work out problems. I was instructed to transpose solos, learn intervals by ear, as well as learn new tunes in 12 keys, by ear! After this, students had to figure out the changes, by ear, according to the melody and genre of the tune. This teacher produced musicians. You need my advice? No problem. You need my help? No problem! You need a friendly push to get over a stumbling block? My pleasure! You want to bypass your responsibilities to mature and grow up? Now, I have a problem with that! Maybe I'm a little outdated. Maybe I spent too much time sucking diesel fumes from many a band-bus tour. kennyj

I have a really bad ear. I can't tell any noting. Usually, I find sheet music to help me start out, and I can figure out the rest of the song on my own. Or I find its boring, and just don't play it. Do you have any suggestions in this matter, or perhaps how to "train" my ear?

Kenny....CHILL....would you rather the guy ask for a gun or something , he only asked for sheet music...he wants to make music....I went thought the same stuff you did....he still has to read the tune and learn it......and by doing that pass the MUSIC on to a younger generation.....PS ...I had my taste of diesel fumes too. Re: Looking for Free Downloadable Sheet Music

Kenny I think people need to learn and what ever helps you learn. If playing Pink panther is going to get you to play sax for 2 days straigh, go for it. But learning is frustrating, and inefficient. If it takes you 30 minutes to figure it out and you give up cuz all you got after 30 minutes was the first few notes.. well that does you no good. Technology provides efficiency, and free well free has nothing to do with contributing. Why should someone have to work 4 hours fliping burgers, just to play the pink panther. If I ever writing anything you guys can all have it for free.. so long as you don't go trying to make money off my back. This guy just want's to play, he's not marketing the song to some network. GNU licensing gota love it. (software reference) Land of the Free, home of the brave. Play on boys.

I've got an alto part to Pink Panther (pretty much memorized anyways- i love that song) but it's kind of a different version... it's for a quartet with 2 altos, a tenor and a bari. I could send it to you if i could figure out how, I guess.. I don't know of any sites though.

Re: Looking for Free Downloadable Sheet Music

But seriously, I agree with kenny. That is how I was tought too. And developing and ear will come with time, but something that can help, is buying some of the jamey aebersold CDs with nothing but intervals, and figure out what the intervals are by listening. if you have you intervals down, all you need is the first note. Transcribing is such an important part of musical education(especially jazz), that you should do as much of it as you can.

Re: Looking for Free Downloadable Sheet Music

I can't believe what I am hearing. KennyJ, and Golferguy are the only people who seem to be getting this right. I could understand if somebody wanted the music to Stablemates because they cant figure out the changes, but Pink Panther. Give me a break. Sure starting off by ear takes more time, but every lift/transcription that you do, the next one comes a little easier and so on. Can you believe that Chet Baker couldnt even read sheet music? Even Sonny Greenwich does most things by ear. Everybody should work on their ears, and if you can't figure out the Pink Panther theme, hit the woodshed until you can, becase the next song will be alot easier. Now cmon people, lets not let Jazz (one of the only improvised art forms out there) go like the rest of the world and die because of laziness. And one final note for all the saxers on this forum, buying gear isn't gonna make you better. Anybody see the 5-digit MARK VI neck that went on eBay for $1350? I shake my head.

Re: Looking for Free Downloadable Sheet Music

There is this program that lets you write music and let your print it out and play. But it's a 30 day trial and after that, you can't print anymore but you can still write notes in the program and it plays back in 50+ different intruments sounds. Also, when you print within the 30 day trial thdere will be annoying words between each staff line, but once you subscribe it's gone and you get extras too.

Also forgot to put that you can download midis from the internet and the program will seperate it into the different instrumental sections. Very cool, so if you can find a Pink Panther solo, you can print it out and play.

You're sort of new to that type of stuff, aren't you? There's propbably a hundred music composition programs. The two best and most popular are Sibeliue and Finale. I've got the new 2004 version of Finale. Pretty high-tech stuff. My favorite feature is notation. You play into a mic and it rights down what you're playing.

GG - Does Finale do scan-to-MIDI? Is there any seller of Finale with really good prices? I do lots of composition using Cakewalk Pro 9, but it's notation software is mediochre at best. I've been using MidiNotate which has some O.K. notation editing capabilities. Will Finale edit MIDI velocities based on dynamic markings? That's a $100 feature right there, in my opinion if it does.

"learning is frustrating, and inefficient" ..... I agree with Kenny. The pink Panther, and all these other songs they are asking for are so freaking easy to figure out by ear. But, if all they want to do is read, and just be more of someone who can play saxophone than a sax player, it's up to them. Just a bit depressing, though... Amazing Grace (easiest key) D G B G B A G E D D G B G B A D B D B D B G D E G G E D D G B G B A G That should be enough, please don't tell me you want me to acatually put each note above the words..... Yes, it does all of that, and a lot more. It's around 350, but if you have an excuse of getting it for educational purposes(in school, or teachin) you can get if for 200. I got mine off one of the stores linked to Ebay. It's made by Coda Techonologies, but they charge full. You can even make your own new articulations and customize velocities. It can scan in sheet music and make it digital, and can make MIDI files music, you can also hook it up to a piano, play, and it notates everything. It does about anything you can think of. I got a proffessor friend to buy it for me, and I gave him the money, so I only payed 200. Just type in Finale 2004 in Ebay, and it'll take you there.
