What mpc do you recommend for under $250?

I play a Dukoff metal D6 on a early 70's Selmer MKVI Tenor. It was a good piece 20 years ago. I want a new metal mpc with a slightly wider tip opening for under $250. Any suggestions? (I've been playing for 40 years). Thanks

Send it to a refacer with a good rep (Doc Tenney, MOJO, Ed Zentera, etc.) and have them open it up to your specs. It should run under $250 and then you can have them customize it for you. selmerfan

Re: What mpc do you recommend for under $250?

I do intend to eventually have the Dukoff D6 refaced, since it's served me well for over 20 years, but I need a spare mouthpiece anyway, and I understand it can take weeks to get a piece worked on. So I need to find one to play while I'm waiting to get it back. The problems I have with it are too many squeaks, and when I try to do effects like fluttertongue, it just closes up on me.

That's ok to disagree with me Kelsey, mine was merely an opinion and additional option. selmerfan

I figured, I was being cautious cause I apparently ticked SaxyQue off by correcting her misconceptions about sax reeds and their thickness vs. stiffness, so I was playing it safe. :) selmerfan Seriously though, the stock Dukoff D7 I had was a pile, I traded to refacer Ed Zentera and he cleaned it up and it plays GREAT for him.

Re: What mpc do you recommend for under $250?

I have a Dukoff 8D for my tenor that plays really good. Sometimes a mouth piece needs to be refaced and Ed Zentera or some of the other guys you mentioned probably do a good job. When I was in College in Texas I had this guy in Dallas do some refaceing work for me. He had done a lot of the big named players and had all their specks in a little black book. (Getz, Coltrane ect.) Now I just play what I have. I bought a Dave Guardala recently and its about to replace the Dukoff........Peace........Kelsey

Spent all of my money on mouthpieces. I'm not rich, but my tone is really good.

Re: What mpc do you recommend for under $250?

Hi guys, thanks for the honorable mention. Been a while since I've posted here. I have a Dukoff nickel plated brass D7 (.100") and the nickel plated silverite piece selmerfan mentioned. That one has not been worked on, so I can't tell you what the tip would end up being. email me at [email protected] if you'd like to see pictures of the brass one. I'll be setting up the silverite one to be brighter than the brass one. - Ed

Heh, I did not know you were Ed Zentera. Nice to see you back, though I see you on SOTW often enough. :)
