I had a Selmer AS300 for 6th grade until halfway through 9th grade when I upgraded to a professional horn. I actually still have my old AS300 around, and just got it out and it plays pretty dang well. Even with the stock mouthpiece that came with the horn, I think it has a nice, full sound, and I clearly remember enjoying learning to play on it. I had actually been thinking of selling mine, but after playing it again, I might see what work I can do to it and keep it around for times when my pro. horn has to go see the doctor. Final verdict- Get the horn that fits your budget better. That way if your son doesn't stick with it, it's less money out the window, and if he does stick with it, a good mouthpiece will go a long way to improve the overall sound. Maybe see if there's anything that can be done to up the ante on the horn if you aren't too keen on dropping anywhere from 1500 to 5000 on a proffesional sax. Happy Playing!
