filing reeds for the first time

I was having trouble with my new Dukoff mouthpiece, so I took it to my teacher and he said my Rico Jazz Selects were too thick for the Dukoff, tho they sounded great on my selmer C*. They are a size 3 medium (3 and a third). He gave me some Hemke reeds that were thinner and they sounded great on the Dukoff. But for my Rico Jazz Selects- should I file them to make use of them? And if so, how do I do it? Thanks in advance!

Re: filing reeds for the first time

Your Dukoff probably has a much more open facing than the Selmer C*; meaning that there is more of a gap between the tip of the reed and the mouthpiece on the Dukoff. With a more open facing, you would use a softer reed. Rather than filing down a #3 jazz select, I would keep those to use with your C* and try some # 2 Rico's.
