Buescher Sopranino Sax

Hi I recently was given this sax, with a number in the 176--- range, presumably making it 1925 or there about. There was a note in the box saying it had had a complete overhaul in 1994, and the pads look great - it hasn't been played since then. I used to play clarinet a long time ago, so I can get a note out of it. However, the low notes are very difficult to play and squeak - my girlfriend, who is a more experienced sax player, also found bottom notes very diffcult... is it just that we are unskilled with the instrument or is there a problem with it? Thanks for any help and advice!! :)
