The letter M is present on some earlier model Conn saxophones built in the mid 1920's-mid 1930's. M is the letter code that was used to identify saxophone. If a patent date of 1914 is present, the horn is not a 1969 vintage. Omit the M and look up the number to determine year. Because of this, it is to be used as a guide or rough estimate of when a King or Cleveland model instrument was manufactured. It does not pertain to those models which were marketed under the Gladiator, American Standard, or other trademarks.
