Rgya-gling (Tibetan Shawm) reed

My sweetie was recently in Nepal, Tibet and China. She picked up a Rgya-gling (Tibetan Shawm- Oboe). I'm tring to find a reed that woudl work with it well. They are a double reed, but an Oboe reed doesn't really work well, perhaps a basson? Anyone have any ideas? They use plastic drinking straws there, since they don't have money for reeds, but I didn't have much luck making it work. Neat instrument.

I'm not sure what size that instrument takes, but contact your local bagpiper. They have a monstrosity called a practice chanter that takes a similar sort of affair. Looks like it could be made from a straw. They also have a taste for the bizarre, and maybe you can find one to help you make your own reeds for it. Good luck!

On a shwarm oboe, use large grass stalks. That is very widely used in Asia. You need to develop a gentle touch as they don't last long. Did you blow on a grass stalk between your hands as a kid? I love that sound!!!!! Best of luck to you :)
