Padding on Mouthpiece

I have just recently bought a new saxopohone better than my old one and on the mouthpiece there is foam padding. I know professional mouthpieces pads but I have heard of hard plastin ones and never a foam one. It completely screws up my articulation. Is it crucial for that mouthpiece to have it or is it safe to peel it off and get another plastic one?
