Your Jazz Setup . . .

Hey, guys. I'm pretty jacked, because I just got selected to be in the Jazz All-State Band on alto. I'm a sophmore in high school, so it's pretty neat. Anyways, I've just switched around my alto setup for jazz, and am real happy with it. I'm interested in what everyone's setups are out there. Thanx?

          Re: Your Jazz Setup . . .

I play clarinet occasionally. Not too often anymore. The R-13 was my dad's. He bought it new in 1966. He used to be quite the clarinet/sax player, but he hasn't played either in years. Every once in a while he'll pick up one of my tenors. The Buffet R-13 is without a doubt the nicest clarinet I have ever played. There is a ribbon inside the case which says "The Sweetest Clarinet Ever Made" and I would have to agree! Their saxophones are also very nice. I like them better than the Selmers. Many of selmers saxophones and clarinets are based on Buffet models. My soon-to-be wife, Alicia plays flute, piccolo and keyboard. Both her flute and piccolo are Gemeindhart. I can barely play flute, and as for piccolo, forget it! We played a Christmas concert together a couple days ago.

I would agree with the R13 it is sweet with plenty of bounce as well as body but the saxes from Buffet are all wrong with me ,,,they sound old in color very cloudy almost as if they were selmers Mk VI being played with a selmer metal mouthpiece ( a la Mule ) yukkkk!!!! I hate that sound it is not fresh enough !!!

This thread seems really familiar, but here goes Alto: Martin Comm II, 1940 Steve Broadus S3 Mouthpiece Vandoren ZZ's 3.5 Tenor Buescher True Tone, 1928 Otto Link Tonemaster Fibracell Med. I'd been having troubles with my tenor reeds drying out and this thing did the trick. Sounds great, last for forever and it never dries out.

What is the general opinion of Meyer mouthpieces? My setup is kind of bland and Meyers have been recomended to me. What type( Facing, Style, Model) is good for Jazz? (Probably a dumb question, but hey I'm only 15)

^^ meyer is a very nice jazz piece.. a lot of people say if defined the jazz saxophone sound.. others would beg to differ.. i personally think its a great piece once u find a reed/lig that fits the kind of player you are.. if im not mistaken the 6m is the middle of the road.. not too open not too closed.. thats like "average" i guess?? im not sure
