Tossing and Turning on buying a new professional alto saxophone.

Yello, I am seriously considering a new pro alto saxophone. After searching for a while, I finally focus my choice on two models: Yamaha 62 II ($1700 new or $1300 well used) and Kessler Custom Vintage Antiqued Alto Sax 50NY with NYSS ($865). Can some specialists give me some advice on these saxophones? Which I should I buy (No More than $1700)? Is a new Yamaha 62II twice as good as a new Kessler and is a well-used Yamaha 62 (i or ii) 50% better than a New Kessler Custom? Thanks very much. (On-line waiting:-).

BTW, Tone is my first concern and I am fond of the feeling and texture of antique sax. Thanks again.

I recommend the Selmer SA80 Series II or the Yamaha 62II. I have a SA80 and it is great, also i know another saxophonist who uses a yamaha 62 and it seems to be a pretty good horn. I assume your looking for a dark, classical tone rather than a bright, jazz tone.

Selmer SA80's cost considerably more than $1700, and in terms of overall quality, I think the Yamaha 62 is a better horn! As for the Kessler Custom; I am familiar with Kessler Music and I have recommended them many times to many people. For student-intermediate instruments, I definately think they offer a good horn for a good price, and they are an honest and reputable dealer. I just don't believe that you can buy a true "pro level" horn for less than the cost of the Yamaha 62. I would definately recommend the Yamaha.

The 62 is definitely worth the money. For the Kessler, considering Dave Kessler's quality and customer service he has, it's not going to be a junky horn, just not pro level. I agree with Jim that you can't get a new pro level horn for less than the 62. Good Luck, -tenor562

You could probably find a B&S (Allora, Chicago Jazz, Guardala, Courtois) alto on closeout that may have more of the vintage tone than most other modern horns.

Consider a P. Mauriat PMSA or PMST-67 or PMXA or PMXT-67 (rolled tone holes) They are around $2000-2500 and from what i've heard they get the vintage tone and the sounds of top of the line Selmer Paris's at 5 grand!

The Yamaha 62II is a great horn for a great price. I tried it in comparison to a Selmer Series III. In terms of comfort and key layout, IMHO, nothing beats the Yamaha. No doubt, the sound of the Selmer was better, but from where I come form, the Selmer Series III was about 3 times the price of a Silverplated Yamaha 62II. Not something that I would break my bank for. Don't know much about the Kessler though. The P. Mauriet saxes seems to be gaining in popularity. No harm giving them a try. Another option would be to buy a vintage professional if you don't mind a used instrument. There are plenty of options for a used horn below $2000. Among them are SML's, Buffet, Buescher, and Conn's. I myself play a Buffet Super Dynaction. I also played a few SML's and Bueschers and they sound very nice. Hope this helps.
