Saxophone Material Quality Through Time

I have noticed that, through time, the saxophone brass seems to be becoming thinner and thinner. If I compare almost any vintage horn, to one of today, it is very noticable, and i am positive all of you have noticed this. What real difference does it make? I prefer "vintage" horns but what do you think? Cheers,
