From Flute to Saxophone

My 23 year old daughter has been playing the flute for the last 10 years (marching band, etc). Since she's been home from college she has been playing her flute with her Father who plays the guitar and she has expressed an interest in playing the saxophone. Even though her father and I know about guitars, banjos and harmonicas, we are not familiar with the sax and we would like to surprise her with a sax for Christmas. Based on the above, what would you recommend?

    Re: From Flute to Saxophone

Um, Price Range? Quality requirements? Long term secondary or just a toy? Is she a Music major, or does she just like to dance on the football field? heh. Just some basic info, new sax beginner will run you at least $800 Intermeate $1500, Advance start at $2000. Used market is extensive and good saxes hold there value quite well. Warning, extensive Asian junk market, most of thouse horns are in the under $800 range. Sidenote: not all imports are junk, just usually the really cheap models.
