de-lacquering

I bought this vintage tenor off ebay last summer. It's a bit of a clunker and needs a set of pads as well. I'm thinking of stripping the lacquer and leaving it unlacquered. Is it hard to remove the lacquer? Does it have to go to a shop? I didn't pay a lot for this horn so if I screw it up, it's not really a big deal.
