Alto Sax Holton Helkhorn "This Unknown..."

Hi to everybody, yes..."this Unknown..." Because on Saxpics I've found only a few pics, Steve Goodson show only the serial number 8around 1907/8) and nothing else (doesn't it have a value?) This sax look really fine, it has some extra vent keys and pads, also the keywork and the finish seems beautiful, but in perpective of playing, someone that has tried it can tell me how is the tone and intonation? Thanks also all the people that have answered me in the preceding questions :-)

Holton saxes can be good players, though they aren't as well thought of as other vintage brands. I've played a Holton soprano for many years and it's been a great horn. Taking into account the variables such as condition, set-up, etc., the only way to know for sure how a horn plays is to try it out yourself. And FYI, Goodson's (and about everybody else's) serial number chart is SO wrong! Holton moved to Elkhorn, Wisconsin in 1917-1918. If it was 1907-8 it would say "Frank Holton Chicago".

the charts are wrong because they arent for the woodwind horns holton made. If you want to date a holton brass instrument, they work fine though. A chart for holton woodwinds does not exist

Re: Alto Sax Holton Helkhorn "This Unknown..."

Thank you to everybody!! The matter of the s/n it seems a few controversial... Looking with attention to the different models I see that the model Beaufort and Collegiate don't have the extra venting keys. They appear for the first time on the Elkhorn model and subsequently they are developed in the model Rudy Wiedoeft. This one was made around 1917, then the Elkhorn has been built a little before I think. I am not a great expert of vintage saxophones but the keywork of the Helkhorn it seems too modern and "futuristic" to have been built in 1907... About playing, (Blackfrancis which model of soprano you have?) unfortunately I can't try the sax. If the soprano (that is notoriusly recognized as problematic in terms of intonation) play well, I'm confident that also the alto should be ok........or not? However I'm talking about Helkhorn andRudy Wiedoeft models...

Hi Dave, I've read your reply at Saxontheweb. You say of dodgy intonation... You could tell me more about this? You have tried a mouthpiece with small or large chamber?

Re: Alto Sax Holton Helkhorn "This Unknown..."

My horn just says "Frank Holton Elkhorn Wisconsin" on the bell. From Dave's ser. no. chart I figure 1924, which looks about right. (Thanks, Dave!) I once had a tenor, which wasn't such a good axe. As for mouthpieces (sop.), I have a high baffle Geo. M. Bundy that just rips, and a modern Link Tone Edge that sounds really nice. Both have had their shank shortened to get up to pitch. No intonation problems that aren't usual to the soprano as a species, but maybe I just got lucky!
