Serial Numbers

Being new to this sax world and continuing to learn before I buy, I wanted to ask you experts another question. Why do people selling saxophones list the serial number? Is there some way of checking if the serial number means anything? Thanks in advance. Robert

    Some saxes are stolen. If you know the serial number you can ask the police to run a check on it. I believe there's even a way to do it on line yourself...

      that, and some horns produced at a certain year can be worth more, and the serial number can be used to date the horn so they can get the most out of their sale
