MEYER Current Production Made is USA (-)

Meyer has been the standard in Alto mouthpieces almost since its inception, and it remains just that even today.  Every serious Alto player at one time or another has played on a Meyer.  Since we can't all afford to spend over a thousand dollars on a vintage New York Meyer Bros. mouthpiece, many of us play a current production model.  Although the current production pieces lack some of the zing of their vintage counterparts, they are still great pieces and you can find some that really sing!

Charecteristics of Meyer Made in USA

  • Meyer stamp on back of mouthpiece
  • Made in USA stamp on shank under Meyer stamp
  • Small Chamber, Medium Chamber, or Large Chamber stamp on shank under table
  • Facing number and length in diamond stamp on table

The current production Meyer mouthpieces are manufactured by J.J. Babbitt in Elkhart, Indiana.  They have been there since the 1970's, and are still one of the top selling mouthpieces today.

The design concept behind the mouthpiece is still pretty much the same as it has been since the New York Meyer Bros. vintage days.  The only differences are the materials used, and small interior changes to the mouthpieces.  Like the New York USA vintage Meyers, the Made in USA current productions mouthpieces are a little thinner.  They also made the inside walls much straighter as opposed to the rounded style they used for the New York Meyer Bros.  The hard rubber compound has also changed over the years, and many players think this makes a big difference in the sound and the way they play in comparison to the vintage pieces.
