There have been a few versions of Yamaha's long-running 62 series. The first are the so-called "purple logo" horns, because the Yamaha name was printed on the bell in black (which has often faded to a purple-ish color by now). The printing is easily worn off, so if you find a 62 with no stamping on the bell, it is most likely one of these. These early 62's also had a long, wrap-around keyguard covering the bell and bottom bow keys (same as the 61 series).
Later, the Yamaha printing on the bell was replaced with an actual factory stamp. The rest of the horn was identical physically.
The 62 "II" series were introduced around 2003 with changes to keywork and Yamaha's new G1 series neck.
The 62 "III" series added further changes and, again, a new neck (now simply stamped "62").
Please note that there is nothing on the horn itself to designate which series it is. Even the newest 62 alto is simply stamped "YAS-62."
