This is an absolutely stunning example of a vintage Conn Virtuoso Deluxe Alto. It does not get rarer then this horn. The Conn Artists were special order only and were often used as presentation horns by Conn to demonstrate the immaculate craftsmanship and highly skilled engraving.
It features a stunning original gold plate finish with pearl inlays on the side keys, right and left table keys, and alternate F# key. The highly unique engraving is what makes this horn a one of kind item. The front of the bell features the engraving of a full naked lady draped in flowing silk stepping onto the back of a swan who is swimming in a lilly pond. While its not certain who actually engraved this horn, its known that the full nude on the back of a swan was a favorite design of famous engraver Julius Stenberg. Additional flower and leaf engraving is along the body and even inside the bell (extremely rare)!
This Conn artist was fully overhauled by Saxquest in 2011. It has an incredible sound. Its said that only the best playing saxophones were given this finish. After playing this horn, I believe it! The complexity of character in the tone of this horn is amazing. Its extremely free-blowing and resonant.
Saxquest didn't bother spit-shining the finish on this horn as a matter of preserving the gold plating. But they did clean it up and it looks great! The pictures do not do this horn justice. This horn is an exquisite example of a great American made instrument.
